Background of the study:
Border trade at Seme Border represents a dynamic interface between local economies and cross-border commerce. The informal nature of trade in this area has generated substantial socio-economic benefits, including job creation, income diversification, and enhanced entrepreneurial activities (Adetola, 2023; Adewale, 2024). However, these benefits are accompanied by challenges such as smuggling, regulatory bottlenecks, and infrastructural inadequacies. Recent research emphasizes that while border trade fosters economic growth and cultural exchange, it also poses risks associated with security and market instability (Ibidunni, 2023). The continuous evolution of trade practices, influenced by government policies and regional economic integration, necessitates a critical evaluation of its overall impact on local communities. This study examines both the opportunities and the challenges presented by border trade, focusing on its ability to stimulate local economies and simultaneously strain existing resources. The research thus offers a balanced analysis, drawing on empirical data to assess the socio-economic implications of border trade in the Seme region.
Statement of the problem:
Despite the promising economic prospects of border trade in Seme, traders and local communities encounter several socio-economic challenges. Regulatory inefficiencies, infrastructural deficits, and illicit trading practices compromise the full potential of the trade. These challenges create uncertainty in income generation and limit sustainable economic development. Moreover, the lack of comprehensive data on trade dynamics hinders effective policymaking. This study aims to address these issues by investigating the socio-economic impacts of border trade on local communities and proposing strategies to enhance its benefits while mitigating adverse effects.
Objectives of the study:
1. To assess the socio-economic benefits of border trade at Seme Border.
2. To identify challenges that impede the sustainability of cross-border commerce.
3. To recommend policy interventions to optimize the positive impacts of border trade.
Research questions:
1. What socio-economic benefits does border trade offer local communities?
2. What challenges do traders face at the Seme Border?
3. How can policy reforms enhance the sustainability of border trade?
Research Hypotheses:
1. Border trade significantly contributes to local income generation.
2. Infrastructural and regulatory challenges negatively affect trade efficiency.
3. Policy interventions can substantially improve the socio-economic outcomes of border trade.
Significance of the study:
This study is significant as it provides an in-depth analysis of border trade’s socio-economic impacts, offering actionable insights for policymakers and stakeholders. It aims to balance economic growth with effective regulatory measures, enhancing the overall trade environment.
Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to the socio-economic impacts of border trade at Seme Border in Badagry Local Government Area, Lagos State and does not extend to other border areas or international trade policies.
Definitions of terms:
• Border trade: The exchange of goods and services across national or regional boundaries.
• Socio-economic impacts: The effects on both the social structure and economic conditions of a community.
• Infrastructural inadequacies: Deficiencies in physical facilities and services necessary to support trade activities.
